About Open Coop

Introducing Open Coop, an open source initiative to drive cooperative innovation and discussion for pastured poultry growers. After years of slapping together makeshift coops or shelling out high dollars for kits we still had to build ourselves, we created Open Coop to share our experience designing and building our own prototype coop. Our goal – create a mobile pasture coop rugged enough to handle different terrain and weather and automate feed delivery with on-coop grain storage, all for at or below the price of existing kits on the market.

Open Coop is a project several years in the making, generously supported by the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program. We are excited to finally launch a package of resources, including a video build series, free architectural design plans, materials list, and website forum. Consider this your invitation to try the model, make tweaks, and share experiences. Fly the coop on those other poultry pens, try Open Coop today!
